the waitress AU, unfinshed
Jun. 19th, 2009 05:09 pmRating: G
Word Count: 763
Characters: Robert, Alice, Sully, Dawn, Mikey, Whit, Violet and Mallory
Summary: Robert, Alice and Dawn aren't angels. Robert and Dawn are really twins. Mallory, Violet and now Alice are waitresses at a diner by the medical school instead of nursing students.
She was new.
The men (and one girl, who was essentially one of the men, because she was the twin sister of one, the girlfriend of another, and all-over one of the gang according to all of the rest) could tell that, because they were each in the place about once a week. The diner was their haunt after everything from bad lectures to bad hangovers and everything good and bad in between. They knew everyone who worked there.
And everyone who worked there knew them – and, most notably, Robert, the grandson of the current Dean of Medicine. There was something like a magnet on Robert that attracted young women to flirt with him. The hypothesis of Sully, the psychiatrist of the gang, was that what attracted them was one-third good looks, one-third prestige (because Robert wasn't actually rich) and one-third complete and utter disinterest.
But the new girl hadn't flirted with Robert at all, even though they had seen her talking to two of his oldest followers when they came in. Mallory and Violet had been at the diner for a couple of years, and each one fawned over Robert to the point where they had both started answering to Mrs. Capio.
(Mikey had even tried yelling it out, and they'd both turned around, followed by immediately blushing.)
The worst of it was, that while the others – Mikey, Sully, Whitaker and Dawn – were completely dumbfounded by the situation, Robert was utterly unaffected. All he did was genially sip his water and wait for a waitress, any waitress, to come by and take his order.
He hoped it wasn't one of the ones that magnetized to his aura, but he couldn't argue with anything. He just wanted to eat.
In theory, so did everyone else, but they were a little distracted.
"She wasn't staring at you, Bert," Mikey pointed out. "What're you going to do with that?"
"Furthermore," interrupted Sully, "I think she was staring at me a little."
"You were howling 'callay, callay!' and dancing about on your tiptoes when we came in," Dawn pointed out.
Deadpan, Robert said, "That's a good reason to stare at anyone."
"Jealous?" Sully challenged.
"I am no such thing."
"Why not?"
"You know I'm tired of the attention. I'm waiting until residency is over for this kind of thing! I've got no interest in women at the moment and it's not like my interest in women was ever much of anything anyway."
"He's a virgin," twin sister Dawn supplied.
"Are you really?" demanded Whitaker.
"No! Well. Yes except for the once in high school, and no, I don't really care –"
"She's married now," Dawn continued, grinning smugly.
"I was best man in her wedding," Robert pointed out.
"Oh, whatever." Dawn spun her straw in her water.
"Isn't he cute?" Mallory gushed into her friend's ear, and Alice put all the effort she could find into not turning red. Because he was cute. Of course he was cute. But she couldn't let them have won, couldn't let them be right. They would never shut up about this man!
"No," Alice said.
The third time the red-haired girl was waiting on them, Robert paid closer attention to her. She hadn't giggled at him once, hadn't blushed, hadn't done any of those sorts of things, and that actually made her interesting.
What further made her interesting was the fact that when she talked to them, she, like Dawn, acted like she actually cared about what they had to say, and not just what they had in their pockets and in their pants.
Her name was Alice, and Robert thought she was beautiful. He'd known that from the start, of course, because he had stopped and looked at her, and he had thought right away she was physically beautiful. But after three conversations he had learned she was emotionally beautiful, too – she had a wonderful spirit, a bright mind, and was silly enough to challenge Sully.
But he wasn't interested in women right then.
Alice only stared at Robert when no one at the table (or any of her friends, for that matter) was looking.
Sully knew she was doing it.
Nobody told anyone.
"So," Dawn was telling Alice, who she had begun to count as a friend, albeit only inside the diner, "we've got that stupid formal coming up at school."
"Yes?" Alice tried not to be interested.
She didn't care who Robert was going with.
It didn't matter if she was having daydreams about him, too. That was what Vi and Mallory were doing, and they could talk about it, and she wasn't going to.
Alice wasn't interested.
"I think Robert intends to ask you," Dawn said.
Alice dropped the water she was holding.

Date: 2009-06-19 09:21 pm (UTC)I was going to go back to drawering because I haven't drawered yet today BUT NOW I CAN'T BECAUSE I'M GOING TO REREAD THIS
SORT-OF-VIRGIN
I take it Eliza is alive and well, then :|||||
Alice would look so precious in a waitressing uniform from the 50s btw. JUST LETTING EVERYONE KNOW.
I am slain. And Alice's heart has stopped. And stopped again, because dropping the water is rather embarrassing.
She will contain her squeals and then explode in the back and annoy the cooks by jumping up and down and squeaking.

Date: 2009-06-19 09:27 pm (UTC)BUT AT EVERY OTHER BOOTH AND TABLE AND STOOL, FLIRT FLIRT FLIRT, CHAT CHAT CHAT, FLIRT CHAT FLIRT CHAT which became clirt, by the way.
ahahah virgin. Sort of.
If she is not an angel, her mother was clearly never a freak. So she was probably in show business but never made it, and if Alice is waitressing she is probably not rich, either, so being the youngest with two brothers in college she has to BRING IN THE MONEYS. I doubt either would have married quite so young, but Charlie has been engaged for a while and is saving his money, and Scott is with Winifred.

Date: 2009-06-19 09:29 pm (UTC)She's probably had a couple of boyfriends but likes flirting for attention more. Not too different, really, but less desperate.

But she is ever so much the overprotected bb.

Date: 2009-06-20 02:22 am (UTC)When Robert was unwell and freezing, somehow I doubt he was focused enough to be changing his appearance to the ~older~ Robert. So he probably would have looked his younger self through almost all of it. That would certainly be a better reason for Alice being so anxious about ever seeing him looking young.
This is unrelated to the AU, clearly.
