Sep. 12th, 2005 04:17 pm"So tell me again why you think it's funny that I say that?"
She's Jen Slater, age 17, a junior at Kimball High. Funny, beautiful, and just a little bit reckless. Get a good look, because there's plenty to look at: perfect straight blonde hair, about to her elbows. Nice body, though just a little thin - dark jeans and a blue angora sweater that reminds me of my mother and godmother alike.
Actually, a lot about Jen makes me think of Aunt Lilly. Except for the fact that while I can talk to Lilly about Jen, telling Jen about Lilly would make me sound insane.
Truth be told, this whole conversation is starting to. Not this one. Not the one in my head. I'm like a constant voiceover. My mother says my dad's the same. Always planning everything out in his head at the exact moment and sidetracking himself.
"Well, because - never mind. But I say 'savvy' and you say I sound like Jack Sparrow and I laugh. Can we leave it there?"
He's me, Jay Williams (it's really Jack Raven Williams, but why the hell'd you want to call me that when you can go with Jay?), also 17. Also a junior at Kimball High, though this is the first year we've lived in Royal Oak. We moved here from Dearborn when my father was promoted. Not that I can understand why they did that. Never mind.
You can get a good look at me, too, but there isn't much to see - brown hair, brown eyes, funky eyebrows. Two hands, which is something I'm hoping lasts, since I look like my father with my mom's eyes anyway. Luckily, without my mom's curls. Guys with crazy curls are not appealing, or so I've heard.
Smiling, Jen nods. "Yeah. We can do that. I'm learning not to ask you stuff, Jay. Your answers are always weird."
I laugh, and slip my hand in hers, and we walk. There's one thing I learned from my father that I didn't get from him - it's what not to say to a girl like Jen. Or a girl period. Although it worked for him, I think it's because my mother thought it was funny.
And as time goes by, we make smalltalk. I haven't known her that long but I'm fond of her and she of me. Not that she knows me too well, but nobody really does. Or should. Not safe for the health of anyone in smalltown Michigan.
We're getting deeper in the woods.
And suddenly I feel something. It's not anything I've felt before, but both of my parents have described this feeling - this nasty feeling of being watched.
I look over my shoulder suddenly, and hear the rustling of leaves, and a raven's caw. I laugh.
Watch yourself, Jay!
And the raven's - Raven's - gone. And Jen's staring at me a little.
"These woods don't have ravens."
"Weird," I shrug.
